I'm at the
International Drug Policy Reform Conference, hosted by the
Drug Policy Alliance in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where today
Assemblymember Tom Ammiano mentioned his support for a
California Sentencing Commission ("We
will have a sentencing commission"), and said that our state could have a sentencing commission already if not for opposition from "conservative Democrats."

I wonder what it would take to establish one in the state after 13 bills have failed. Why are conservative lawmakers so concerned about sentencing commissions? Do they believe the commission will be insulated from public punitive sentiments? I wish I could believe that.
